Girls 6th Grade vs. Zimmerman

Park lost its second round game to Zimmerman, 25-18.

Mikala Ebert got park on the board, then Maggie Yarosh hit Imani Jackson with a great pass for a layup, and Park led early, 4-0. Zimmerman scored the next seven points to go up, 7-4, before Jackson scored on a nice drive and layup.

Yarosh grabbed an offensive rebound and hit the put-back to give Park an 8-7 lead, then Yarosh hit from outside for a 10-7 Park lead.

Zimmerman hit two baskets in the paint to take an 11-10 lead, then Jackson scored inside again to take the lead back, and the half ended with a one point Park lead, 12-11.

In the opening minute of the second half, Lauren Myhra went coast-to-coast for a layup for a 14-11 Park lead, the Zimmerman went on an 11-0 run to take a 22-14 lead with under two minutes to play.

Rachel Welke scored on a nice Park fast break off a nice Abby Bordewick pass, and Ebert hit a nice bank-shot down the stretch, but Zimmerman’s center (she scored 16 of her team’s 25 points) was too much for Park to handle, and the lost 25-18.

Girls 6th Grade vs. South St. Paul Packers

I’ve watched a lot of youth basketball games this season, but this game may have had the most exciting finish of them all!

In the first half, Park had two baskets, a 15-foot bank-shot by Allison Keith, and a lay-up from Imani Jackson. Meanwhile, South St. Paul had a solid half, and led Park 12-4 at the break.

The second half belonged to Jackson. First, Jackson hit a layup, then a short jumper inside to cut the Packer lead to four, 12-8. South St. Paul hit a jumper of their own to take a 14-8 lead.

Jackson hit a layup to cut the lead to four, then made a steal and layup to cut the lead to two, 14-12.

With six minutes to play, South St. Paul hit one of two free throws to take a 15-12 lead, then both teams went ice cold and didn’t score until the final seconds…

With 32 seconds remaining, Jackson drove the lane and hit a 10-foot floater to pull within a single point. South St. Paul threw the ball in, dribbled upcourt, and the ball was stolen by Jackson near mid-court. Jackson weaved through two defenders and hit a tough bank shot to give Park a one point lead with ten seconds left!  (scroll down to watch video!)

After a South St. Paul timeout, play resumed and the Packers were hit with a technical foul for having six players on the court. Park missed their free throws, but also got possession back due to the technical, and Jackson took the inbounds pass and dribbled the clock out!

Jackson scored 14 of Park’s 16 points, but every player contributed with great defense, and fine rebounding.

Park was one of three teams with 2 wins and 1 loss in the tournament.

Congratulations, girls, on a great tournament!

Stats:
Imani Jackson—14 points, 1 rebound, 2 steals
Allison Keith—2 points, 3 rebounds
Maria Barr—5 rebounds, 2 steals
Maggie Yarosh—3 rebounds, 1 steal
Abby Bordewick—1 rebound, 1 steal
Kim North—1 rebound
Lauren Myhra—1 rebound
Olivia—2 steals
Mikala Ebert—2 steals
Rachel Welke—1 rebound, 1 steal, 1 block

St. Louis Park Girls 7th Grade vs. Minnetonka
Second Tournament Game

Park outscored Minnetonka in the second half, but couldn’t overcome a poor-shooting first half, and fell 19-12.

Park had only two baskets in the first half of play, a nice bank shot and a nice runner, both by Mary. Park played good defense and held Tonka to only 12 points in the first half, but trailed 12-4 at intermission.

Park played great in the second half, outscoring Minnetonka 8-7. Tonka scored the half’s first basket, then Sarah Webb had the play of the day. Webb was on the wing when she caught a pass. She faked a pass to her left, and two defenders ran away from her, after which she drained a 15-footer.

Park pulled to within six on the next possession when Mary hit again, this time a tear-drop banker in traffic.

Tonka scored the next four point to go up 18-8, before Mary scored inside to cut the lead to eight with three minutes left.

Tonka called a time-out, but, when play resumed, Tati stole a pass and went coast-to-coast for a layup and Park trailed by only six!

Tonka went into a stall with a minute remaining and Park committed a foul, and Tonka hit one of two from the line.

With time running out, Park had a couple decent shots, but couldn’t connect and the game ended 19-12.

Mary was the standout of the game, with 8 of Park’s 12 points, 8 rebounds, and one block. Tati grabbed four rebounds; Jane, Claire and Meryssan led Park’s defense, each making a pair of steals.

Roster: #4 Emmy, #12 Sarah Webb, #13 Meryssan, #14 Mo, #20 Mary, #22 Claire, #23 Jane, #25 Sarah Brandt, #32 Amber, #21 Tati, #24 Morgan
