5th Grade Girls Basketball
Tuesday, April 8th, 2008Fridley Tournament
Saturday, February 9, 2008
No, the 5th grade girls didn’t win a game, but they played their best ball of the year, and had their best offensive and defensive game of the season during the Fridley Tourney.
In game one, Park lost, 50-11, to the Li’l Vols.
In game two, Park lost 26-16, but played an awesome all-around game!
Park played a 2-1-2 zone, and held Centennial to four second-half points.
Park’s shooting was the best it’s been all year, as they put up a season-high 16 points!
In game three, Park lost 31-4, but 24 of the opponent’s 31 points were scored by a single superstar. Park had plenty of quality shots, but they just weren’t dropping.
Park had only 8 players during the tournament, but each girl scored at least one basket, each had a rebound, and each had a steal!
Congratulations, 5th graders, on a great tournament!

St. Louis Park Girls 5th grade vs. Wayzata
Third Tournament Game
Reported by Ryne McNary
Park played great, scoring more points in their third tournament game than their first two combined, but fell to Wayzata, 38-7.
Emma Tessian was the offensive star of the game, scoring five of Park’s seven points, with Carly Donald adding two.
Park did a nice job of handling the ball, and cut down their turnovers from their previous tournament games, but Wayzata was a bit taller, a step faster, and the girls couldn’t get many quality shots off, and when they did Wayzata didn’t miss too many rebounds.
Again, the attitude for Park, playing their first year of traveling ball, has been excellent, which is a real testament to the coaching staff.

St. Louis Park Girls 5th Grade vs. Inver Grove Heights
First Tournament Game
Things can only get better for the 5th grade girls, who played their first ever traveling league game.
The bad news: Park lost 52-2. But, there were some bright spots if you looked hard enough.
First, the scoring. Emma Tessien scored on a long jumper in the second half that was very impressive.
Second, the defense. Lauren Resnick, Tessian, Skyler, Amy Schulz and Quturah Jones all had at least one steal, and Tessian, Shelby Borash, Mara Hathaway, Annie Gustafson, Carly Donald and Abby Olson each had at least one rebound.
The pass of the game for Park was a beauty by Donald, who threaded the needle, but Park couldn’t capitalize on it, and the best dribbling exhibition was put on by Tessian.
“We need to play better,” said Carly Donald. “We need to get better at passing and defending.”
