Park vs. Prior Lake

This game can be summed up in a couple words: we pitched great, fielded great, but hit the ball right at Prior Lake fielders all game.

Jimmy Heck pitched a complete game for Park, allowing three runs on three hits and an error in the first inning, and no runs on three hits after.

Park scored its only run in the top of the third when Nick Omodt tripled and scored on a Scott Foltz sac fly.

Park had only four hits in the game, one each by Omodt, David Petit, Grant Welsh and Derrick Keller, but there were few strikeouts by the locals–we just hit the ball at someone, and Prior Lake’s defense was very solid.

Park’s defense was nearly perfect, with Heck making a nice double play when he speared a shot up the middle while pitching, and threw to first to double up a runner.

Monday, June 23, 2008 @ Edina
Park vs. Edina

Park led early, but had to go extra innings to beat Edina, 9-8, in 8 innings Monday night.

In the top of the first, Park scored four runs on a triple by Nick Omodt, and singles by Scott Foltz, Grant Welsh, John Gallice and Paddy Clancy. Park added another in the second when Max IntVeld reached on an error, and scored on a Welsh single.

Meanwhile, Ryne McNary, the starting pitcher, threw four innings, allowing four runs on four hits, two walks, three hit batters (ouch!), five strikeouts, and there were two errors made behind him.

Leading 5-4 after four, Welsh relieved and allowed two runs on two hits in 2-1/3.

Park’s Welsh scored on a wild pitch to give Park a 2-run lead, 6-4, but with one out in the bottom of the 7th, Jimmy Heck relieved and was greeted with a two run double down the right field line to tie the game. With the winning run at second, Heck bore down and sent the game to the 8th.

In the 8th, Dylan Vosika and Jack Bordewick walked, then Foltz doubled into the left-field corner to plate two, then Foltz scored when Welsh reached on an error.

Leading 9-6 in the bottom of the 8th, Edina made a nice comeback, scoring two, and had the tying run on second, when Heck coaxed a groundout back to the mound to end the game.

Defensively, McNary turned a nice 6-3 double play, David Petit made a nice running catch in left, and Gallice made a couple nice catches in right.

Thursday, June 19 @ Dred Scot Field, Bloomington
Park vs. Bloomington

Another game against Bloomington, another nail-biter.

Ryne McNary started on the hill for Park and pitched out of a few jams, allowing two runs, 1 earned, over five innings, on six hits, three walks, a hit batter and five strikeouts. McNary was helped by fine defense by Derrick Keller at short, Dylan Vosika at first, and Nick Omodt in center field.

In the top of the fifth, trailing 2-0, Park scored one when Scott Foltz reach on an error, and scored on an Omodt triple.

David Petit relieved McNary and allowed one run over the last two innings on two hits.

Trailing 3-1 in the top of the 7th, Park attempted one of its patented comebacks. With two outs, Foltz singled to right, Omodt doubled, and Max IntVeld walked to load the bases.

Grant Welsh, with two hits on the game already, ripped a shot up the middle that should have tied the game, but it nailed the pitcher in the calf, keeping it in the infield for a single as one run scored and the pitcher fell to the ground in agony. With the bases still loaded, Keller, facing a new pitcher, ripped what looked like a sure tie-breaking 2-run single between third and short, but the Bloomington shortstop made a diving stop and threw to third from his knees for a force out to end the game!

You hate to lose any game, but as usual Park fought to the last out, the pitching and defense were great, and another hit here or there would have won the game.

Park vs. Bloomington

Going into the top of the 7th, it looked like the day was made for Scott Foltz. Foltz led off the bottom of the first with a homer over the green monster in left, then held Bloomington to one hit through six innings. Oh, by the way, Park also had only one hit through six innings (the homer!). Park scored its second run on a walk to Paddy Clancy, a stolen base, a groundout by Jack Bordewick, and an RBI groundout by Jimmy Heck.

Leading 2-0 in the top of the 7th, Bloomington’s leadoff hitter reached on an error, then Bloomington’s catcher tied the game with a 2-run homer over the center field fence. Foltz got out of the inning without further damage, and Park batted in the bottom of the 7th.

With a runner on third and one out, Park tried a squeeze to win the game, but the bunt was missed, and the game went extra innings.

In the top of the 8th, John Gallice relieved Foltz and pitched scoreless ball for an inning. Park couldn’t score in their half of the 8th, then Gallice ran into some bad luck when an error, a bloop hit, and a walk loaded the bases with no one out. Derrick Keller relieved and was welcomed to the mound with a 2-run double, but he bore down and didn’t allow another run to score, still Park trailed 4-2 going to the bottom of the 9th.

Gallice led off the bottom of the 9th with a double, Clancy walked, Bordewick doubled in Gallice with Clancy advancing to third, and Ryne McNary plated Clancy with a bunt single to tie the game. With one out and runners at first and third, Nick Omodt hit a medium fly ball to left, Bordewick tagged, Coach McNary sent him, and he was gunned out on a nice throw (my bad).

Keller held Bloomington scoreless in the top of the 10th, then Park batted in their half. Foltz led off the inning with an infield single, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a groundout, and with two outs Grant Welsh ripped a single through the hole to end the game!

There were too many great plays to name them all, but the pitching of Foltz, Gallice and Keller was awesome. The defense was almost perfect for the second game in a row with Keller and Clancy making several great plays on grounders, McNary catching a tough popup behind the plate, and one over his shoulder while playing short, and the outfield of Omodt, IntVeld and Welsh played perfect. First baseman Bordewick saved two errant infield throws on a great scoop, and a catch and sweep tag.

Friday, June 6-Sunday June 8th, 2008 @ Burnsville
Game 1Park vs. Lake Elmo

Park lost a tough one in their opening tournament game, falling 4-3 to Lake Elmo.

Jimmy Heck started for Park, and pitched great, allowing only 3 runs on 6 hits in five innings. He walked two and struck out three. Grant Welsh pitched the last two innings, allowing only one run on three hits. He struck out one.

As has been the case many times this year, Park didn’t start hitting until the late innings. Against two crafty left-handers, Park kept beating the ball into the ground, and through five innings had no runs on three hits.

In the 6th, we scored two runs when Scott Foltz singled, Nick Omodt doubled and Derrick Keller singled.

In the bottom of the 7th, Grant Welsh doubled and scored on a Foltz single. Park had the tying run on second when the game ended, and left seven runners on base during the game.

Game 2 vs. Bloomington

This game had everything, except a great final score, as Park fell to Bloomington 7-6.

John Gallice started for Park and allowed five runs on four hits in five innings. He walked two, hit two batters, and struck out 10.

Park scored three in the first when Tre Munson singled, stole second, then Nick Omodt, Scott Foltz, and Derrick Keller singled. We added another in the second when Munson doubled and scored on a Foltz single.

Trailing 5-4 in the sixth, Dylan Vosika doubled to lead off the inning, Max IntVeld ran for him, advanced to third on a Munson infield single, and scored on a Foltz bloop single with an incredible slide home. Ryne McNary singled in Munson to give Park a one run lead.

McNary, who relieved Gallice in the sixth, allowed a bleeder up the middle, an infield single, then a hard single scored two. Park got out of the inning when McNary got the next batter to hit into a 1-6-3 double play.

In the bottom of the 7th, Park’s David Petit led off with a walk, but Park couldn’t bring him around, and the game ended with Park losing by a run.

Park vs. Lakeville

In order to advance to Sunday, Park needed a win, and, for tie-breaker’s sake, couldn’t allow many runs. They went out and won, 12-0, with Derrick Keller throwing a complete five-inning game, allowing only two hits (to the first two batters he faced), four walks, and he struck out four.

The offense was scoring early and often. Park scored two in the first when Tre Munson singled, stole second, scored on a Scott Foltz single, and Foltz scored on a Keller single.

In the second, Park scored five, all with two outs, when Jimmy Heck singled, Munson reached on an error, Foltz singled, Keller reached on an infield pop-up that fell, Nick Omodt singled, and Jack Bordewick walked. After Omodt stole third, Bordewick got in a rundown between first and second while Omodt scored.

Park took the third inning off, then scored three in the fourth when Munson doubled, Keller, Omodt, Bordewick and Grant Welsh singled.

In the fifth, we added our last two when Munson doubled, stole third, and scored on a Foltz sac fly. Keller walked, David Petit reached on an error, and Keller scored on a Dylan Vosika single.

Defensively, Ryne McNary made a nice play in the hole at short and threw to Paddy Clancy covering for a force, and David Petit made a great play in the outfield, and moved to short in the last inning and made a great play on a slow roller.

Quarter Final Game
Park vs. Lake Elmo

Park was glad to hear that they’d get another crack at Lake Elmo, but had about the same luck, falling 6-4.

Jimmy Heck started for Park and an infield error led to four unearned runs, and John Gallice relieved with two outs in the first inning. Gallice pitched 3-1/3, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks.

In the top of the fifth, down 6-0, Park rallied. Dylan Vosika walked, Jack Borewick and Ryne McNary singled, Scott Foltz singled, and Tre Munson, running for Foltz as a courtesy runner, scored on a Derrick Keller single.

Keller pitched a scoreless 5th and 6th, but Park came up empty in the 6th and 7th despite two runners on in the 6th, Bordewick and McNary, who each singled. In that inning, Vosika was robbed of a sure double by a diving catch by the Lake Elmo left fielder.

Defensively, after the first inning, Park played great, with McNary, playing shortstop, grabbing a ball behind second base, then firing to Bordewick who made a great scoop on a one-hopper.

David Petit made one of his patented diving catches in right, and Munson made some nice catches on the big field (400 feet to center).
