Freshmen vs. St. Francis
Coach Skip Chell promised a fun brand of ball, and that’s exactly what he delivered Thursday afternoon in the lid-lifter against St. Francis.
After starting pitcher John Gallice allowed an unearned run in the top of the first, Park came right back in their half. Derrick Keller led off the bottom of the inning with a booming double off the center field fence, and he scored on a Christian Erickson triple to the gap.In the second, Gallice got out of a two out jam when he snagged a line drive up the middle, saving his own life in the process.
In three innings of work, Gallice allowed three runs (only one earned), struck out three, and played great defensively.
St. Francis led 3-1 going into the bottom of the third when the Park bats came to life again. Keller singled, Bobby Otto doubled, Gallice doubled, Erickson singled and Jack Bordewick singled to put Park back up, 4-3.
Park put the game away in the bottom of the fifth when they batted eight men, scoring three times.
In the top of the 7th, Keller allowed back to back doubles to score a run, but he fought back, striking out the last two batters, the last one on a called strike on a nasty bender.
Keller pitched the last four innings, allowing one run, and striking out seven.
Offensive highlights:
Derrick Keller: single, double, 2 runs
Bobby Otto: double, 1 run, 1 RBI
John Gallice, 2 doubles, 1 RBI
Christian Erickson: triple, single, walk, 2 runs, 1 RBI
Jack Bordewick: single, walk
Ryne McNary: 2 singles, 1 RBI
Eric Holmberg: single, 1 RBI
Ben Gibbs: 2 BBs
David Petit: 1 BB
The defense was pretty solid all the way around, with McNary making a nice diving play at second on a tough grounder, Erickson making two nice force plays at second, Scott Foltz calling a great game and blocking several balls in the dirt, and Park turning a strange 6-4-3-2 double play (for those of you scoring at home).
