Freshmen vs. Benilde

Behind the great pitching of John Gallice, and the great hitting of….John Gallice, Park blasted Benilde, 13-1, Thursday afternoon.

Gallice pitched a complete game, stopped after 6 innings by the 10-run rule, allowed one run on 2 hits, struck out 9, walked 1 and hit two batters (one in the spine!).

Park led the entire game, but put the game on ice in the 6th when they batted around, and them some, scoring 8 runs.

Gallice led all hitters with 3 hits, Christian Erickson singled twice with one RBI, Grant Welsch had two hits, Ryne McNary and Dylan Vosika had RBI-singles, and Scott Foltz singled. Derrick Keller set a school record (I’m assuming) with four walks in four plate appearances.

Defensively, Scott Foltz stopped everything behind the plate, and threw a runner out at second with Maxfield Rotert applying the tag on a bang-bang play. Otherwise, Gallice didn’t let too many batters put the ball in play!

Freshmen vs. North Branch
Doubleheader–Game 1

Watch out, ‘72 Miami Dolphins! Park ran its record to 6-0 on the ‘08 season, beating North Branch by scores of 12-2 and 8-3.

In game one, Ryne McNary pitched a five inning complete game that ended by the 10-run rule. In the top of the first, North Branch scored an unearned run, but Park came back with 8 in their half, batting 13 men; John Gallice had a double and triple in the inning, and Christian Erickson had two singles.

Gallice and Ben Gibbs led Park with 3 hits each, Erickson and Max IntVeld collected 2 each, and McNary, Scott Foltz, David Petit, and Jack Bordewick each collected one.

McNary allowed 2 runs, 1 earned, on five hits, he struck out 6, walked 2, and picked off one baserunner.

Game 2

Scott Foltz did his best Double Duty Radcliffe imitation, taking off the pads and going to the mound to win the second game, 8-3. Foltz pitched 6 innings, allowed 3 runs, only 1 earned, on 4 hits, he struck out 6, beaned one batter, and didn’t issue a walk.

Maxfield Rotert led all Park batters with three solid singles, Dylan Vosika collected two hits and three RBIs, and Josh McElhaney (single), Derrick Keller (double), and Scott Foltz (double) collected one hit each.

David Petit pitched the 7th inning for Park, walked one and beaned one, but didn’t allow a hit or run.

Freshmen Baseball team improves to 4-0 on season

Monday, May 5, 2008 @ Cooper
Freshman vs. Cooper

Park won a tight game Monday, nipping Cooper, 6-4.

Bobby Otto started on the mound for Park and pitched 4-2/3 innings, allowing 3 runs, 2 earned, struck out 8 and walked 2. Otto left the game with Park holding a 4-3 lead, and Christian Erickson relieved and picked up a save, allowing one unearned run, striking out 4.

The offense was led by Derrick Keller, who was a homer shy of the cycle–in fact his triple went across the street and may or may not have knocked on a neighbor’s door as Keller legged into third.

John Gallice had two hits, and Grant Welsh, Ben Gibbs, Bobby Otto, Maxfield Rotert, and Scott Foltz each collected one hit.

Strong pitching, gaudy hitting lead Frosh over Spring Lake Park

Thursday, May 1, 2008 @ Spring Lake Park
Freshmen vs. Spring Lake Park

Park’s pitching was, literally, almost perfect, Thursday afternoon as they blasted “the other SLP,” 12-3.

Derrick Keller started on the mound for Park, pitched four innings of hitless ball, struck out 9 and walked 4; Spring Lake Park did score, though, on a hit batter and a few errors.

Ben Gibbs relieved and allowed 2 runs on 2 hits, he struck out 4 and walked one. Ryne McNary mopped up in the last inning, and after falling twice during warmups, drawing giggles from the crowd, he retired the side in order with 1 strikeout.

Meanwhile, Park’s hitting came in waves like the Marines on Omaha Beach, scoring 3 in the 1st and 3rd, 1 in the 4th, 2 in the 5th and 3 in the 6th.

Christian Erickson hit his second homer of the season and drove in three runs, Scott Foltz broke out of an early season slump with three singles (and a beanball to his melon) and four RBIs, Bobby Otto singled three times, and Grant Welsh hit a single, double, and triple–you better believe he was trying for the cycle in his last at bat, but he couldn’t connect.

Ben Gibbs got his first hit of the young season, Eric Holmberg had two hits, Maxfield Rotert drew two walks, and Jacob Johnson was hit with a pitch and later scored.

Park will travel to Cooper on Monday to take on the Hawks.

Freshmen baseball team beats Chisago Lakes, 7-6!

Tuesday, April 22, 2008 @ Chisago Lakes
Freshmen vs. Chisago Lakes

Park traveled an hour into the Great White North Tuesday, and won a see-saw game against a gutty Chisago Lakes club, 7-6.

Park jumped in front in the first inning. Christian Erickson led off with a single up the middle, Shane Boettcher walked, John Gallice singled, Erickson scored on a fielder’s choice, then Boettcher scored on a Bobby Otto infield out.

Park added two more runs in the second when Erickson singled again, Boettcher walked again, and both scored on a Gallice single.

Otto started on the mound for Park, and pitched well, working out of trouble and leaving after 2-1/3, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits, 3 walks, and 7 Ks. Erickson relieved with one out in the third, and pitched the rest of the way.

Chisago took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the 4th, but Park tied the game in an unusual way. With two outs, Scott Foltz reached when the center fielder dropped his deep fly ball, then he advanced to second when the Chicago Lakes pitcher mistakenly went into a windup. The pitcher almost made the same mistake again, but his coach finally got him to go from a stretch and Ryne McNary singled off a curveball just inside the right field line (after Foltz stole the catcher’s signal and relayed it to McNary) to score Foltz.

Chisago went ahead again in the bottom of the fifth, but Erickson tied the game with a solo shot into the woods in the top of the 6th.

“I knew it was gone,” said Erickson after his bomb.

In the top of the 7th, Foltz squeezed home Otto, who had singled to lead off the inning, to give Park a one run lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Erickson had enough in the tank to coax a groundout to second, a strikeout, and a groundout back to the mound to end the game.

Erickson, who had a great day at the plate with 3 singles and a homer, ended up pitching 4-2/3, allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 3 hits, 3 walks, and he struck out 4.

The defense was shaky at times, but there were some nice highlights, especially Foltz’s gunning of a runner at second.

Josh McIlnaney did a great job coming off the bench to play the last few innings at third, and collect a nice single to right.

Season record, 2-0
