Freshmen vs. Spring Lake Park

St. Louis Park sang their swan song Thursday, 10-running Spring Lake Park, 15-5, in five innings.

Christian Erickson pitched the first two innings, allowing no runs on one hit, and he struck out three.

Max IntVeld pitched the third and had some control problems, allowing five runs on three hits and three walks.

Jack Bordewick pitched a perfect fourth with one strikeout, and Eric Holmberg pitched a perfect fifth with a strikeout.

Offensively, there were many heroes. Bobby Otto went four for four, including a nicely placed bunt single, Bordewick had two hits (one that got a piece of the pitcher!) and two RBIs, John Gallice had two hits and two RBIs, Derrick Keller had a single and triple, Scott Foltz had a single, Ryne McNary, Eric Holmberg and Josh McElhaney all had pinch hit singles, and Jacob Johnson blasted a homer over the green monster with his grandfather in the stands!

Defensively, Otto had a nice running catch in center, Vosika made nice catch in foul territory while playing third, and Maxfield Rotert had some nice plays at second.

Freshmen vs. Southwest
Doubleheader-Game 1

Park beat Southwest by the 10-run rule, 11-1, in five innings in the front end of a twin bill Wednesday afternoon.

Bobby Otto went the distance for Park, gave up 1 run on 4 hits in 5 innings; he struck out 3 and walked one batter.

Otto helped himself at the plate with three singles, and he had plenty of supports from his team. Josh McElhaney added two hits, Christian Erickson had a hit and RBI, David Petit drove in 2 runs with a hit, Shane Boettcher singled and walked, and the blow of the day was a pinch hit 2-run homer over the green monster by Grant Welsh.

Defensively, Petit played a heck of a game in right field with two putouts and an assist.

Doubleheader-Game 2

The second game was more of the same, this time with Ben Gibbs throwing a 7-inning complete game, with 11 strikeouts, as Park won 12-2. Gibbs allowed 5 hits and didn’t walked a batter.

Actually, surprising at it may seem, Park trailed at one point 2-0, but they scored 11 unanswered runs to put the game away.

Maxfield Rotert (single, double, 2 RBIs), Derrick Keller (double, triple, 2 RBIs), Dylan Vosika (single, double, RBI) and Jack Bordewick (2 singles, 1 RBI) each had multiple hits, while Gibbs (single) Eric Holmgren (single, RBI), Ryne McNary (single, RBI) and Jacob Johnson (double) also tallied hits.

McNary, catching his first game of the year, threw out a runner trying to steal third, and Vosika made a couple of fine plays at third base.

Freshmen vs. Irondale

Park beat Irondale, 9-7, Monday afternoon, in a game that was closer than it should have been.

Park got on the board with two in the first when John Gallice singled, Eric Holmgren drove him in with a double, and scored on a Derrick Keller single.

Irondale tied the score in the 3rd off starting pitcher Scott Foltz, but Park answered with 3 in the top of the 4th. David Petit opened the inning with a single, Dylan Vosika singled, Gallice reach on an error by the first baseman which scored Petit, Ryne McNary drove in Vosika with a single, and Gallice scored on a groundout.

Irondale scored 2 in the fourth to make it 5-4, with most of the runs due to some sloppy fielding.

Park added 2 in the 5th when Bobby Otto singled and stole a base, was driven in by a Foltz single, and Foltz scored on a Jack Bordewick double.

In the bottom of the 5th, Irondale scored 3, but could have scored more if not for a nice defensive play by first baseman Vosika. After a throw got by Vosika, an Irondale runner broke for third, and Vosika threw a bullet toward third that pitcher Foltz intercepted, and the return throw nailed a runner at first to end the inning.

With a 7-7 tie, Otto relieved Foltz and he threw two scoreless innings to pick up the win when Park scored two in the top of the 7th on a bases loaded fielder’s choice—Gallice hit a grounder to first, and the first baseman touched first, and threw to second while one run scored; Grant Welsh, who started at first, stayed in a rundown long enough for a second run to score.

Batting:
John Gallice: single, 1 RBI
Ryne McNary: single, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 HPB
Eric Holmgren: single, double, 1 RBI
Derrick Keller: single, double, 1 RBI
Bobby Otto: single
David Petit: 2 singles
Scott Foltz: 2 singles, 2 RBIs, 1 HPB
Jack Bordewick: double, 1 RBI

Freshmen vs. Fridley

Park and Fridley played a quick 90-minute game, and won, 3-2, Tuesday afternoon.Starting pitcher, Derrick Keller, allowed a hit and run in the first inning, but Park came back with three in their half when David Petit singled, Eric Holmberg singled, Christian Erickson singled in Petit, Derrick Keller drove in Holmberg with an RBI-groundout, and Bobby Otto singled in Erickson. Those four hits were all Park would get all game!

Meanwhile, Keller mowed down Fridley inning after inning, allowing one last Fridley run in the top of the 7th on a double and a pair of groundouts.

Keller allowed 2 runs in 7 innings, he allowed 4 hits, k’d 7 and walked 2.

Defensively, Park had only two errors, and Jack Bordewick had two great scoops at first base.

Park Freshmen vs. DeLasalle
Game 1

Park improved their record to 8-1 with a convincing 13-6 win over the DeLasalle Islanders in a light drizzle.

Ryne McNary started for Park and went the first 3-2/3, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits, with 5 strikeouts and 4 walks.

Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the third, Park tied the game, then went ahead with a 4-run fourth.

Christian Erickson relieved a tiring McNary with two outs in the fourth, and pitched 1-1/3 innings, didn’t allow a run, struck out 3 and walked 3.

Trailing 7-3, DeLasalle scored 3 runs off reliever David Petit in the 6th inning to make the game close, but Park pulled away with a 6-run 6th, and Grant Welsh pitched a scoreless 7th to seal the deal.

The offense was very balanced with all 9 starters scoring at least one run. Jacob Johnson broke out of his slump with two big hits, McNary had a single and double and 2 RBIs, Petit had two hits and 2 RBIs, Scott Foltz had 1 big single and 3 RBIs, Christian Erickson stayed hot with two hits, Ben Gibbs had a 2-RBI single, and John Gallice had his poorest game at the plate in more than a week with only 1 hit in 3 at bats!

Defensively, second baseman Gibbs had the play of the game when he turned 4-3 double play, and Foltz ended the game by throwing out a runner attempting to steal second (down by 7 runs!).

Game 2

The second game of the afternoon was played in a constant rain, and ended in a 4-4 tie after 6 innings.

John Gallice pitched the first 4 innings, allowing 4 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits, he allowed 3 walks, hit a batter, and k’d 4. Bobby Otto relieved and threw 2 scoreless innings, allowing 1 hit, he struck out 2, and didn’t walk a batter.

The offense was led by Eric Holmgren, who had a sac fly, double, and single. Gallice had one hit and 2 walks, Otto doubled, Josh McElhaney singled, Grant Welsh singled, Dylan Vosika doubled, and Shane Boettcher had a walk and beautiful sacrifice bunt.

With a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the 6th, Welsh singled, stole second, was bunted to third by Boettcher, but after Vosika grounded out, Gallice, the hottest hitter in baseball, grounded out to end the inning.

At this point the rain started to come down harder, and the umps called the game.

Defensively, Park had many bright spots. Boettcher made a fine running catch while playing right field, Otto made several nice plays on the mound, and Holmgren threw out a runner attempting to steal.
