Park vs. Detroit

Park beat a tough Detroit team, 4-2, behind the pitching of Derrick Keller. Keller pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on seven hits, he sruck out seven, and walked two.

With a runner on third, shortstop Ryne McNary fielded a grounder, looked the runner back, threw out the batter at first, then first baseman Jack Bordewick threw home to catch the runner trying to score.

Catcher, Scott Foltz, made a nice tag play at home to prevent a run, and the defense played great all-around.

Park scored one in the 1stt when Tre Munson singled, stole second, and scored on a Keller single. Park added another in the 3rd when Munson singled, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Grant Welsh sac fly. With the score 2-2, Park went ahead in the 5th when Max IntVeld walked, advance on a wild pitch, then took third on a ball in the dirt, and when the catcher threw wildly to third, he ran home.

Park added its last run in the 6th when McNary squeezed home Bordewick.

Park vs. Grand Haven Freshmen

Another complete game, another big win, this one 10-0 over the Grand Haven Frosh. Ryne McNary pitched a rain-shortened complete game, allowing no runs on three hits. He walked 1 and struck out 4. McNary had plenty of defensive help as he coaxed 7 ground balls, all of which were turned into outs–Park didn’t commit a single error.

Park scored early and often, scoring three in the first when Nick Omodt walked, stole second, scored on a Derrick Keller single, Jack Bordewick doubled scoring Keller, John Gallice singled in Bordewick.

Park added one in the second when Max IntVeld doubled, and scored on a Tre Munson RBI groundout.

In the 6th, Park scored six runs with two outs when Gallice doubled, Paddy Clancy walked, Dylan Vosika singled, IntVeld walked, Scott Foltz singled, IntVeld scored on a wild pitch, Munson singled, and Omodt singled.

Park vs. Grand Haven JV

John Gallice pitched Park’s 3rd complete game in a row, leading the Orioles to another 10-0 win. Gallice pitched all six innings (shortened by the 10-run rule), on one hit, one walk, one hit batter, he struck out 9, and Park didn’t commit an error.

Park got the scoring started in the 2nd when Ryne McNary walked, Paddy Clancy singled, Scott Foltz singled to load the bases, and Tre Munson forced in McNary when he was hit by a pitch.

In the 3rd, Nick Omodt singled, and Grant Welsh homered to make the score 3-0. In the 4th, Munson singled, stole second, and scored on a Derrick Keller single.

Park put the game away in the 6th when Foltz reached on an error, Munson singled, Omodt singled to load the bases, Keller singled in Foltz, Munson scored on a wild pitch, and Omodt scored on a Welsh sac fly.

Park vs. Chicag
o

In the last game of pool play, Park beat Chicago, 7-3. Scott Foltz went the distance, allowing three runs on seven hits, four walks and a hit batter. Park made only one error, but otherwise was very sharp as Foltz didn’t have a strikeout.

Park scored two in the 4th when John Gallice singled, Derrick Keller singled, Jack Bordewick drove in Gallice with a single, and Keller scored on a Grant Welsh sac fly.

With the score tied 2-2, Park scored five in the 6th when Tre Munson singled, Gallice walked, Keller reached on an error, Bordewick singled, Welsh reached on an error, Max IntVeld reached on a fielder’s choice, Dylan Vosika singled, Paddy Clancy reached on an error, and IntVeld scored on a wild pitch.

The defense was great all-around, with Keller playing great at short, and catcher McNary throwing out a runner trying to steal and catching a touch pop-up up against the backstop.

With a 4-0 record in pool play, Park advanced to the championship game against…..Chicago!

Park vs. Chicago
Championship Game

Park had to settle for second place, as Chicago’s pitcher was a bit too much for the boys in a 5-2 loss.

Jimmy Heck started for Park and allowed 5 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks over 4-1/3 innings, he struck out 4. Park committed one error in the field.
Derrick Keller relieved and didn’t allow a run over 2-2/3; he struck out 2.

Park scored two in the first when Nick Omodt singled, Keller and Jack Bordewick walked, then Gallice singled in Omodt and Keller. Park could only scratch out two hits the rest of the game.

Sweet 16 Round

Park vs. Shoreview

One Shoreview parent said it was the worst beating the 6th ranked Shoreview team had taken all season. In a win-or-go-home game, Park clobbered Shoreview 16-4.

Coming into this game, Shoreview had a 12-2 record in their league (a good one!), averaging more than 8 runs a game, with a +44 run differential.

Scott Foltz took the hill for Park and went all seven innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, two walks, and one harmless error.

Park lost the coin flip and batted first, and Tre Munson led off with a solo homer to get Park on the board before the fans were comfortable in their seats. Nick Omodt followed with a single, Derrick Keller singled, Foltz singled, John Gallice singled, Paddy Clancy singled, and Dylan Vosika drove in a run with a bases loaded walk, and Park led 4-0 after one.

Shoreview battled back but Park scored a single run in the third when Vosika drove in Clancy, who had reached on a fielder’s choice, with a single. In the fifth, Park added three when Foltz singled, Grant Welsh singled, Clancy reached on an error that drove in Foltz, Munson singled in Clancy, and Omodt singled in Vosika who had reached on a fielder’s choice.

In the 6th we added a run when Vosika scored Jack Bordewick with a sac fly.

In the 7th, with Park leading 9-5, the Orioles put the game on ice with a 7-run outburst. Munson opened the inning by reaching on an error, advancing to third when the throw rolled down the right field line, and scored when the throw to third got past the third baseman (where I come from that’s a homer!) When the dust cleared, Omodt doubled, Keller singled, Bordewick singled, Foltz was beaned, Welsh singled, Vosika reached on an error, Heck singled, Munson reached on another Shoreview error, and Omodt singled, his 5th hit of the game!

Park was so far ahead by the middle of the 7th inning that David Petit batted left-handed and barely missed hitting a double (it landed a few feet foul!)

Park vs. Eastview

I never thought I’d want to beat a team more than Mahtomedi (can’t stand their coach), but Eastview’s coach woofed it up before the 9AM game, and spent the afternoon eating crow.

Before the game, coach Keller asked the Eastview coach how they did the night before.

“We 10-runned this team…they were like you guys….they hung with us for awhile, then we ended up routing ‘em. We just have too much hitting.”

For those of you who don’t remember, Park lost to Eastview in the playoffs last week, but were down only two runs going into the 6th. In the Eastview’s coach’s mind, we never had a chance! In fairness, Eastview is a great team, but Park was just a bit better.

Jimmy Heck pitched a complete game, allowing only two runs on two solo homers (both to the same Eastview batter); he walked one, hit one batter, and struck out two. For those of you who aren’t math majors, that means that Park registered 19 outs without strikeouts: 12 groundouts and 7 flyouts. Everything they hit we caught!

In the first inning, Eastview had runners on first and second but Heck got the next batter to hit to Ryne McNary at third, who stepped on third and fired to first for a double play. Later in the game, Paddy Clancy speared a liner and turned it into another double play!

Derrick Keller was stellar at short, and Max IntVeld made a great play on the run while playing third.

Trailing 1-0 in the fourth, Park rallied for four runs when Grant Welsh doubled, Jack Bordewick walked, Derrick Keller reached on an error, and Paddy Clancy singled in two. In the fifth, Park added two more when Welsh, Bordewick and Keller singled, and McNary singled in two. With Heck’s pitching, and Park’s perfect defense, that’s all it took.

Park vs. Bloomington

Park’s pitching was a bit off, and the Orioles fell to Bloomington, 12-4.

John Gallice started for Park and had one of those innings that all pitchers eventually have. It seemed like everything Bloomington hit fell in, and Park trailed 7-0 after 2/3 of an inning. McNary relieved and allowed three runs on four hits over 3-1/3 innings. David Petit mopped up, allowing two runs on four hits in two innings.

In the first inning, Park took a short-lived lead when Tre Munson singled, stole second, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored on an RBI groundout by Grant Welsh. In the third, Park added a run when Welsh singled and scored on Jack Bordewick’s double. In the fifth we scored our third run when Nick Omodt had an infield single, went to third on Bordewick’s single, and scored on an RBI groundout by Derrick Keller.

Our last run, in the 7th, was scored when Keller singled in Munson, who had walked.

Bordewick and McNary each had a single and double, but Park couldn’t seem to bunch their hits together enough to score against a pretty good Bloomington junkballer.

Park vs. Mankato

Park lost to Mankato in a wild game, 15-11, and had to be satisfied with being the fourth best team in the state.

Park’s pitching was pretty well spent, but Derrick Keller took the hill with little rest, and Mankato jumped out to a large lead.

In the first, Park scored when Tre Munson reached on an error, Keller singled, and Bordewick was credited with a sac fly, though the right fielder dropped the ball.

In the fourth, Park added three when Paddy Clancy singled, Munson singled, Nick Omodt doubled, and Keller doubled.

Keller ran out of gas in the fifth, and Grant Welsh relieved, but Mankato took a 13-4 lead after five and a half.

In the bottom of the 6th, Park came off the canvass and scored seven. Max IntVeld opened the inning with a single, Clancy walked, Munson doubled, Omodt reached on an error, Vosika hit a two-run homer, Scott Foltz singled, David Petit reached on an error, Ryne McNary singled, IntVeld doubled, and Clancy singled.

Petit, who had relieved in the 6th, pitched the top of the 7th, allowed a pair, and Keller came back to the mound to get the last out. Trailing 15-11, Park could only muster a Foltz single before being retired.

Park played 49 innings of baseball in three days, and according to several neutral parties, had the best defense in the tournament.

Congrats to the U15s on a great tournament.

League Playoffs
Monday, July 7, 2008 @ Woodbury
Park vs. Woodbury

Park beat Woodbury, 7-4, in their first league playoff game, thanks to some great pitching by Jimmy Heck and John Gallice.

Heck pitched the first four innings, allowing three runs on four hits; he walked one and struck out one. Gallice pitched the last four, allowing one run on one hit; he beaned one and struck out four.

In the top of the second, Park took an early lead when Derrick Keller doubled and scored on a Jack Bordewick double.

After Woodbury tied Park in the bottom of the second, Park took a 3-1 lead when Tre Munson led off the third with a triple, Omodt drove in Munson with an infield single, Omodt stole second, advanced to third on a Grant Welsh single, and scored on an RBI groundout by Keller.

Woodbury tied the score again in the bottom of the third, and the game stayed tied until the top of the 6th. Keller opened the inning with a single, Max IntVeld walked, Keller scored on a Bordewick double, and IntVeld scored on a wild pitch.

Leading 5-3 in the 7th, Park added two more insurance runs when Welsh reached on a fielder’s choice, Keller tripled in Welsh, and Paddy Clancy reached on an error with Keller scoring.

In the bottom of the 7th, Gallice allowed one run, but struck out the last batter to end the game!

Defensively, Park played great, executing a run-down to perfection, Munson made a nice play in center, and Scott Foltz threw out a would-be base stealer.

League Playoffs, 2nd round
Wednesday, July 9 @ Eastview
Park vs. Eastview

You may not believe this, but despite a 10-2 loss, Park almost won this game!

Scott Foltz started on the mound for Park and pitched great for 3-2/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and a walk; he struck out four. When Foltz left the mound, the game was tied 2-2. John Gallice relieved pitched well until tiring in the 6th when it was only a 4-2 Eastview advantage. John allowed five runs on three hits, four walks and a few errors. David Petit relieved, allowing two runs on three hits, and Derrick Keller got the last out.

Park didn’t hit like they can, but Jack Borewick and Keller were both two for three.

Park vs. Forest Lake

Park throttled Forest Lake, 9-1, in their opening game of the state tourney.

Derrick Keller went the distance, allowing one run on seven hits; he walked two and struck out eight.

Through 4-1/2 innings there was no scoring, but Park dented the scoreboard in the fifth when Nick Omodt singled, stole second, Grant Welsh singled, Keller singled, and Jack Bordewick singled to plate two runs.

Park added six in the 6th when Jimmy Heck walked, Tre Munson reached on an error, Scott Foltz bunted both runners over and also reached when the throw to first was wild, and Heck scored while the first baseman retrieved the ball. Paddy Clancy walked to load the bases, Welsh singled in two, Keller reached on an error, and David Petit drove in two with a single.

Park’s last run came in the top of the 7th when Munson doubled, stole third, and scored on a Clancy groundout.

Park’s defense was awesome, with the infield of Heck, IntVeld, McNary, Clancy, Omodt and Bordewick playing perfectly, and the outfield wasn’t too shabby, as left fielder Welsh threw out a runner at the plate by about 25 feet!

Park vs. Eden Prairie

Park lost to Eden Prairie, 5-4, in one of the most exciting baseball games of the year. Jimmy Heck pitched the first 4-1/3 innings, allowing four runs on six hits; he walked one and struck out three. Heck was relieved by John Gallice in the fifth and pitched the rest of the game, allowing only one run on five hits.

Eden Prairie took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but it could have been worse as Park’s defense prevented further damage.

Park went ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the first when Tre Munson walked, Grant Welsh singled with Munson going to third, Munson scored on a Bordewick groundout, and Welsh scored on a Scott Foltz single.

In the third, Park took a 4-1 lead when Munson singled, stole second, Nick Omodt singled Tre to third, Munson scored on a wild pitch, and Omodt eventually scored on a Bordewick sac fly.

Eden Prairie chipped away and went ahead 5-4 in the top of 6th, and could have gone ahead by more in the top of the 7th when a runner on third tagged and tried to score on a deep fly to right field…but…Welsh threw a pea, on the fly, to catcher Foltz, and the runner was out by five feet!

In the bottom of the 7th, Park had the tying run on first when the game ended—DARN!

Park’s defense was great again with Max IntVeld making a sliding catch near the fence while playing third base, Foltz completing a strike ‘em out/throw ‘em out double play, McNary and Clancy playing great up the middle, and the outfield catching everything in sight!

Park vs. Rosemount

Things didn’t look good before this game started. First, we were playing the “Rosemount Irish” at St. Patrick’s field in St. Patrick, Minnesota. Secondly, three of Park’s players didn’t arrive before the game started due to some faulty MapQuest directions.

Still, Park felt good with Ryne McNary (Irish last name!) on the mound, and the most Irish kid of all, Paddy Clancy, at second base.

McNary pitched the first 5-1/3 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits; he beaned two batters and struck out one.

Park scored in the bottom of the first when Nick Omodt walked, Grant Welsh was hit by a pitch, Derrick Keller reached on a fielder’s choice, Omodt scored on a wild pitch, and Keller scored on a Scott Foltz sac fly.

After Rosemount made the score 2-1, Park went up 3-1 in the fourth when Clancy blooped in an Irish single over the first baseman’s head, McNary reached on a catcher’s interference, both moved up on a wild pitch, and Clancy scored on a Tre Munson sac fly.

Clancy helped Park out of a 5th inning jam when he speared a liner and threw to Keller at second base for an inning-ending double play.

In the bottom of the fifth, McNary singled, advanced to second with two outs, and Keller lined a base hit into center. The dumb Irish third base coach sent McNary, who was thrown out by 25 feet at home to end the inning.

Rosemount pulled within 4-3 in the 6th when Welsh relieved with the bases loaded. Welsh got out of the jam with only one run scoring, and the game was tied, 4-4, after six.

Welsh was helped in the top of the 7th when McNary, now playing right field, made a sliding catch on a sinking liner, then Welsh got out of the inning without further trouble.

Needing one run to win, Park opened the 7th with a Foltz walk. Max IntVeld singled, then, with two outs, someone hit a bomb off the left-centerfield wall to end the game. Let me see…who was that kid that hit the ball? Who always seems to get those hits…..Tre Munson!

Defensively, Park played great, with Dylan Vosika making a great play at first base, roaming to his right, then throwing to Welsh covering first on a bang-bang play.
