St. Louis Park Girls 6th Grade B vs. Centennial

To paraphrase a line from “What About Bob?”—baby steps, baby steps. Park’s 6th grade gals are making baby steps, and will hit the win column soon, just not today, as they lost to Eagan, 22-7.

Park had tons of shots on goal in the first half, but only Abby Bordewick’s 12-foot jumper hit the mark, and Eagan led 13-2 at the half.

In the second half, Bordewick again found the range with another bomb to pull Park to within 13, 17-4, followed by a terrific block by Maggie Yarosh that led to a Park break and Amani basket. Yarosh got in the scoring column with under 2:00 to play when she was hacked going to the basket and drained one of two for Park’s last point of the game. Eagan added their last basket with a few ticks left, making the final 22-7.

Bright spots: Hanna IntVeld had three rebounds, Imani did a great job handling the ball and had few turnovers, and the entire team played with great intensity.

What do we need to work on? “We need to pass better and work on our rebounding,” said Bordewick, who led Park with four points.

St. Louis Park Girls 6th Grade B vs. Mayer

Park played a great game, but lost a heart-breaker to Mayer, 23-18.

After trailing 8-0, Abby Bordewick got Park on the board with a long jumper, and Amani made a great move and hit a layup to pull Park to within four. Mayer got hot at the end of the half and went on an 8-0 run going into the break.

Mayer scored the first hoop of the second half, then Maggie Yarosh hit a nice leaner off the glass making the score 18-6. After a Mayer free-throw, Hannah IntVeld hit a 10-footer in traffic, then Mayer responded with two more baskets, increasing their lead to 23-8. Then….Park caught fire!

Imani hit a shot from just inside the three-point line, Rachel hit a banker, Bordewick hit again from outside, and Imani stole a pass and scored on a layup to bring Park to within seven, 23-16, with two minutes left!

Park’s defense stopped Mayer again, and Rachel Welke, Park’s rough and tumble forward, hit a jumper to pull the Orioles within five with under a minute remaining.

Mayer did a nice job of handling the ball in the last minute, and they ran out most of the clock before Park made a steal and missed at the buzzer.
